Homeowners Insurance for Minnesota Homes

Your home is likely your largest asset. A standard HO-3 policy does a lot — but the details matter: replacement cost vs. actual cash value, sewer backup, jewelry limits, and wind/hail deductibles can all make a significant difference when you actually need to file a claim.

What's Covered

Coverage details — and what to ask about.

Your home is likely your largest asset. A standard HO-3 policy does a lot — but the details matter: replacement cost vs. actual cash value, sewer backup, jewelry limits, and wind/hail deductibles can all make a significant difference when you actually need to file a claim.

Dwelling Coverage (Coverage A)

Pays to rebuild your home after a covered loss — fire, wind, hail, or ice. Coverage should be based on replacement cost, not market value. We help you calculate the right limit so you're not underinsured.

Personal Property (Coverage C)

Covers your belongings — furniture, electronics, clothing, appliances — if stolen or damaged. Replacement cost coverage pays what it actually costs to replace items today, not their depreciated value.

Liability (Coverage E)

Covers you if someone is injured on your property or you accidentally damage someone else's property. Policies start at $100,000 — we typically recommend $300,000 or more for most homeowners.

Additional Living Expenses (Coverage D)

If your home is uninhabitable after a covered loss, this pays hotel stays and extra living costs while repairs are made. A critical coverage that's easy to overlook during the quoting process.

Other Structures (Coverage B)

Covers detached garages, sheds, fences, and outbuildings. Typically 10% of your dwelling limit — we'll make sure the amount is actually sufficient for what you have on your property.

Sewer & Water Backup Endorsement

Standard homeowners policies exclude sewer backup — one of the most common and expensive claims in Minnesota. This endorsement is inexpensive and strongly recommended for most homes.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions.

What is replacement cost vs. actual cash value?

Replacement cost pays what it actually costs to rebuild or replace — no depreciation deducted. Actual cash value subtracts depreciation, which can leave you thousands short on a claim. Always choose replacement cost if it's available.

Are floods covered under homeowners insurance?

No. Standard homeowners policies exclude flood damage. If you're in a flood-prone area, you need separate flood insurance through the NFIP or a private flood carrier. We can help you evaluate whether you need it.

How does wind and hail coverage work in Minnesota?

Wind and hail are typically covered perils under Minnesota HO-3 policies. However, your deductible for wind/hail claims may be different from your standard deductible — sometimes a percentage of your dwelling limit. We'll explain yours clearly.

Should I update my coverage after renovating?

Yes. Renovations increase your home's replacement cost. You should update your dwelling limit after any major project — kitchen remodels, additions, finished basements — to avoid being underinsured at claim time.
